How to set and clear Read-Only/Write protected Attributes from your USB


Read-Only or Write protected attributes protect your usb from copying, deleting, formatting, or make any change to the content within your usb. You may set your usb read-only or write-protected for some reason. For example, one might to protect his data from deleting by other people because they are very important to them. In contrast, your usb might be set read-only by virus itself, so you must also know how to clear it.

Now, Let's first make your usb read-only, and then clear it.

- Plug in your sub, and hold down window key, and press r to open run dialog.
- Type in cmd to open command prompt.
- In command prompt window, type diskpart, and hit enter. You will see the dispart window like this:


- Then type "list volume"  and hit enter to show all the available volumes on your computer


Look for one which is your usb drive, and look for this volume number, the type
"select volume number" Where number is your corresponding number of your volume. For example, in the above is 5 so, type I type "select volume 5" to select the volume to operate on it.



Before you continue, check it current attributes by typing "attributes disk" and hit enter to show its current attributes.

Now, look at the Current Read-only State whether it is No or Yes. If it is yes, it means your disk is read-only or write protected attributes, so you cannot write or modify anything to the usb, so refer to how to clear read-only attributes section. In this case, No.

So to set it read-only type "attributes disk set readonly" and hit enter, then you will see as below:



Now, look at the Current Read-only State whether it is No or Yes by typing "attributes disk" and hit enter.
Now your usb is write-protected, so you cannot write or modify anything to it.
Try out by deleting, or copy any file to your usb, you will receive the following message popup


How to clear read-only or write protected

Now it's time for you to clear your usb from readonly attributes.

If you follow along from the previous steps on how to set your usb read-only attribute, please follow those steps again. However, instead of writing "attributes disk set readonly", write "attributes disk clear readonly" and press enter, then you will see as below


Now you have cleared read-only to your usb, and that you can use your usb as normal!
